Stats Don't Lie: UGA Defense

You can just look at the Dawgs' defense and see vast improvement from last season to now. But I don't think anyone expected THIS much improvement in just one year. Look at where the Dawgs' defense ranks nationally in a few important categories:

Not listed is our pass defense, which ranks 15th nationally, tackles for loss, which ranks 8th, and turnovers forced, which ranks 14th. Sure, our offense has looked great the past two games, but our 8-game win streak is a result of Grantham and the defense.

People are going to call for an LSU blowout in the SEC Championship game, which very well may happen. But with a defense like this, we should stand a good chance to at least stay in the game.

  1. It all starts with Defense and other college programs and NFL teams are taking notice of this turnaround and contacting TG's agent. Grantham is now a hot commodity and it will be difficult to keep him for long. McGarity will need to do everything he can to entice Grantham to stay at UGA. It may require Malzan type dough to keep him. I say... "Pay the man!"

  2. DEFENSE HAS ONLY PLAYED 3 RANKED TEAMS.

GAVE UP 80 POINTS IN FIRST 2 GAMES, 7 IN LAST ONE.

I AM NOT IMPRESSED OVERALL, BUT HAD 1 GOOD GAME AGAINST AUBURN.

  3. The defense didn't give up 45 points to south Carolina , the special teams and offensive turnovers accounted for 21 of those. The d was not great vs. Boise, but also had a short field due to a bad turnover. They have improved especially on the d line since the beginning of the year

  4. Assuming we play LSU in the SECCG I expect the UGA defense to give LSU all they can handle. I know, I continue to hear the "UGA hasn't played anybody." A recent blogger, prior to the AU-UGA game, said the same thing. He said that AU would hang 30 points and 300 rushing yards on UGA. Well, AU got 7 points and 50 yards rushing. Guess AU just had an off day.

I would not be at all surprised if UGA beat LSU or Bama or Arkansas. If UGA wins out (reg. season, SECCG, and bowl game) I am guessing a lot of folks will find some excuses for how that could happen. After all, UGA doesn't deserve any win, has to be luck, cheating, or whatever else.

  5. Joe,

First of all, stop yelling. As for our defense, just because we've "only played 3 ranked opponents", that doesn't mean our D is automatically overrated. What are we supposed to do, let these sub par teams score on us?

  6. How bout holding ranked teams like Boise or South Carolina to less than 20 points for starters? 80 points in those 2 games, not impressive. Auburn game was a solid defensive effort. But it's 1 game.
