Thursday Thrash: Jarvis Jones Running Through "The Storm"

Thursday Thrash is a weekly segment in which we incorporate some of the greatest songs of all time (mostly metal, but not always) into a topically relevant post revolving around current issues at the University of Georgia. As a note, artistic liberties will be frequently used in this relation. Basically, the only premise/rule is that I can't put on some crappy Shania Twain song or some no-talent lightning catcher with autotune (see KESHA).

The accusations surrounding Jarvis Jones situation continue to cast a shadow on his prospects of starting in the first game this season and perhaps even more following the Bronco affair. Based on what I've heard (and continue to hear), I'm still looking for Jarvis to be on the field come September 3rd. at the Columbus paper came out with some new stuff that looks to be a little more "involved" than I expected, but I fully believe that the prior relationship with Tony Adams is going to be the difference here. Here's a little snippet from Chris White's article yesterday:

More research through police records shows that in early 2010, while Jones was attending USC, Adams twice withdrew cash and made notes on the transactions that may connect the money to Jones.

Adams withdrew $400 from an account on Feb. 16, 2010, and labeled the transaction “Jarvis laptop,” and he took out $300 on March 12, 2010, and labeled it “Georgia Blazers Jarvis Jones,” according to the records. Read more: Further Connection in Jones Case, LE.com

To the casual observer, this looks like a some pretty heavy stuff, in the words of Marty McFly. The main issue in question here is if the prior relationship that Tony Adams had with Jarvis was based on his athletic prowess or linked to his involvement in sports. What leads me to believe (among a few other things) that Jarvis is going to be ok is because his relationship with Adams goes AT LEAST back to middle school and is the type that is going to stand up to some scrutiny from the NCAA.

If that falls into line as I feel it will, the next part of the issue is if he knowingly accepted these things as an "ancillary benefit" of knowing Adams, which would affect his amateur status. Call me crazy, but I don't know a whole lot of people who would invest 15 years of their life and basically care for a kid for some possible NFL payday down the road. It's not logical and doesn't really fall into the Occam's razor category of likely events.

I'm just speculating though, and I could very likely be completely wrong, but hey, I'm just going off of what information I've gathered and common sense.

All of this stuff is really depressing, no matter how I may try to twist and turn it. That's why I incorporated this into the Thrash portion of the blog today. There's not much better to cheer you up than a nice metal song with some EPIC thrashing. So, today's weapon of chioce is Tarpon Springs, FL product, SAVATAGE.

The title is appropriate because the album is based on two events that were also "heavy" as I described above. The first, the Maersk Dubai incident, occurred less than a year before this album was released and the second event regarded the Irish reporter Veronica Guerin who died fighting the growth of the drug trade in her country.

These two unrelated events were combined into the story of an old Spanish sailor, who decided to end his life by sailing his small boat out into the Atlantic until it sinks. In his mind he has romanticized this decision as a glorious, Vikingesque way to die. You know that was "the storm" part that the guy was going through...

Yeah, pretty much the EXACT SAME as the Jones situation, RIGHT?

Anyway, without further ado, I present to you "The Storm" from the concept album The Wake of Magellan.

(I just basically chose this because the song is awesome and I wanted to talk about Jarvis Jones some more. I really sucked with the relation parts)

HAPPY THRASHING!
