Hoops Recruiting Update

If you look at Georgia Basketball's "Commitment" page on any given recruiting website for 2012, you will see a nice blank screen. What started out as a promising opportunity for the Dawgs given their appearance in the NCAA Tournament, has turned into crickets chirping as it pertains to commitments. With Evan Nolte (who's BROTHER is on our team), Jordan Adams, Damien Wilson, Jordan Price, and NC State transfer Ryan Harrow all choosing to place ball elsewhere, I must say I am starting to get a little tight in the collar here folks. Fox getting Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is starting to look like some of these "one-hit wonder" golfers who win one major and never threaten the top of a major leaderboard again.

The good news? In basketball you don't need 18-20 good recruits, you just need 2 or 3. Now, let's update you on our remaining 2012 targets:

  1. Shaq Goodwin (6-8 PF) -- Says he is down to Memphis, Georgia, UCLA, Florida, and Alabama. Remember he is an AAU teammate and friend of Jordan Adams who recently committed to UCLA. (Also, those guys' AAU coach, Korey McCray, was recently hired as an assistant at UCLA as well. He is our number 1 guy I assure you. ***MVD Note: Goodwin has recently narrowed his choiced to UF, Bama, UGA, and Memphis. Haven't heard anything about the first two in his recruitment, so looks like a two horse race between UGA and the Tigers.
  2. Marcus Hunt (6-5 SF) -- Starting to get some late love as Texas and Louisville have offered scholarships. Missouri could swoop in at the last second if they pull the trigger and offer. I've also heard he still has UGA and Tech at the top of his list. He has recently said he should decide sometime in August.***MVD - Bama appears to be at the top of the list as well, maybe the favorite.***
  3. Alex Poythress (6-8 PF) -- Hopefully he will remain true to his first lover as UGA was the first school to offer. Since then he has gotten offers from all the big boys. I tend to think he will stay local (not necessarily UGA but he's not going to any northern schools imo).
  4. Andrew White (6-6 SF) -- Recently picked up an offer from UGA. He has a nice offer list and I suspect his offer was due to the coaching staff actually see him play in person during the July evaluation period. Personally, I'm not too optimistic about this guy as he was a late offer an has no plans to visit UGA.
  5. Kenny Gaines (6-4 SG) -- I think he is more of a combo guard and is an AAU teammate of Marcus Hunt. Haven't heard a ton about him lately as it pertains to UGA. ***MVD - Dawgs are looking good here. I'd give us a 75% shot as of now (Friends with Gerald Robinson and Marcus Thornton and knows Dustin Ware).
  6. Charles Mann (6-5 PG) -- Recently transferred to Milton High School which means we are probably doomed. Hope we get him because he is a late bloomer regarded as the best point guard in the state.
  7. Robert Carter (6-8) -- Another blue-chip recruit (from Georgia) that will probably end up at Kentucky.
We'll keep you updated if any of these guys (or any other ones) make a move soon.

  1. I dont see how Marcus Hunt could pick Bama in the end.Right?Does he know how many guard and wing players they have?!?!I hope Mark Fox takes a little break from his "good guy" recruiting and lets Hunt know how long it could be till he starts playing significant minutes for the tide if he picks them and not UGA.Let us all hope that he has talked to Marcus about that already.

  2. Yes, unfortunately Bama has become serious competition when it comes to Hoops recruiting. They got Nick Jacobs for '11 and a few of our targets have Bama on their list for '12. I see no problem telling a recruit that "Team B has X amount of wing players" etc. We need to try something different.
