49 Days: 7 Weeks and & 7 Commits

Well, actually only five, but I thought it fit well into the title anyway.

Today marks a momentous mental milestone in the countdown. I promise that the alliterative writing there just freely flowed from my fingers (there it is again), but nonetheless, today is the first day under 50, now is a seemingly reasonable number of weeks away, and most of all means that a not many vacant numbers remain ahead on the countdown.

We're both excited about that last one.

So what's all the hubbub about, you ask? Well, Dawg Night, which is a huge prospect camp, was held in Athens last night. It featured about 80 or so of the best recruits from the classes of 2012, '13, and '14. We didn't mention it this week because we really don't cover football recruiting much, unless of course something big is going down like last night. It's much, much too hard to keep up with all of that stuff and the opinions people hold are far too polarizing considering the decisions of 17 and 18 year olds (in some cases 15 and 16 year olds).

If we feel a recruit has the potential to contribute early, we'll obviously cover that (as we did the Rome, Mitchell, Swann, Drew, and Crowell commitments) and give it some special live-blog love and, on occasion make our way to the ceremony and stream video (as with Crowell).

I think this falls into that category.

The Dawgs picked up the following commits last night:

  • 2012 OT John Theus -- He's the 2nd-ranked OT in the class and the 7th rated player overall. Will be the highest rated o-lineman to ever step on campus.
  • 2013 QB Brice Ramsey -- Top QB prospect in Georgia for 2013 and will be in the nation's elite as well. A product of Camden County.
  • 2013 RB Derrick Henry -- A freak athlete who set the nation's top Nike combine rank with a 4.53 forty, 38.5 vertical, and a 4.38 20 yard shuttle at 6'4 and 235 pounds. Has gained 5,263 rushing yards and 65 touchdowns in his first two years in high school and will most likely be Florida's top recruit in the 2013 class.
  • 2013 WR/CB Tramel Terry -- Terry looks like a WR prospect now, but it has been floated around that he might have more upside at CB. He's very good friends with Brice Ramsey (they train together all the time) and that was most likely the reason he pulled the trigger. Reportedly was going to commit to South Carolina early, but the two wanted to play together in college.
  • 2014 (That's right) RB Stanley Williams -- I don't know much about this kid, quite obviously, but he was offered earlier this week and subsequently ran a blazing 4.28 forty last night. If you're unsure about that number, make sure and check our staff's rendition of the forty of Vance Cuff and the NFL Combine's. It was a full .3 seconds slower, so tread lightly. Despite that, the kid has to be pretty daggum good. In case you're not convinced, make sure and watch his 12 year-old highlight tapes below.

According to Michael Carvell (who has a great article on the commitments), the top four guys in the list were somewhat of a "domino" commitment, as they all made their pledge at the same time after each came to a decision based on the other's.
We'll have some more insight on each of these commitments throughout the week as we profile them a little closer than the cursory discussion today.

Good day for Coach Richt and staff. Hopefully those guys who've commited and sign over the last 4 or 5 years put together a nice season and we get to keep all of those guys.

Next up: 48 Days
