Diamond Dawgs to Start Regional Play This Afternoon

The price you pay for only being one game over .500 and still making it to the postseason is pretty obvious if you're Georgia: Your a$$ is getting sent off to Corvallis, Oregon. UGA will open postseason play this afternoon at 4pm EST (1pm local) against the no. 2 seeded (in their regional) Creighton Blue Jays. The winner will go on to play the winner of the Oregon State/Arkansas Little-Rock matchup (presumably Oregon St.). Keep in mind, these are double elimination format and their will only be one team from our Regional advancing (leaving 16 teams overall).

I even found some betting odds to win our Regional via TheGreek.com:

Oregon State: 1/3
Creigton: 3/1
Georgia: 5/1
Ark-LR: 50/1 (hmmm, sounds tempting)

It looks like the Dawgs are sending out right-hander Michael Palazzone against Creighton in game 1. Palazzone had an impressive 3.20 ERA (low for college) and an even more impressive 73-11 strikeout to walk ratio (then again, Georgiadogs.com may not have updated their stats in a while..who knows). Creighton is throwing out right-hander, Jonas Dufek, who was 11-1 with a 2.17 ERA this season. Runs could be at a premium this game for both teams.

The game can be seen on ESPN3.com with the radio broadcast on 960 AM in Athens.

(unrelated side note: Creighton, which is in Omaha, Nebraska, averaged a staggering 13,507 fans PER GAME at their men's basketball games this year. Stegeman only holds 10,500. That's pretty impressive stuff...these Missouri Valley Conference teams don't mess around with their athletic support)
