Tennessee Gets New Hoops Coach

Last night, Tennessee named Cuonzo Martin as head coach. Martin had been at Missouri State for three years, and turned the program around VERY quickly. Just look at Missouri State's win improvement during his three years:

Year 1 (2008-09): 11-20
Year 2 (2009-10): 24-12
Year 3 (2010-11): 26-9 (finished 1st in Missouri Valley Conference)

In addition, this gives Tennessee a new coach within a week of firing Pearl, so they do not have to wait on the Shaka Smart/Brad Stevens sweepstakes to take place. This is also big news concerning their current 2011 basketball recruits, primarily combo guard Kevin Ware (who we have been keeping our eyes on lately). Ware has said he wants out of his LOI, but would like to stay at Tennessee IF he likes to new coach. We'll see soon what Ware decides.

As for Cuonzo Martin, he played his college ball at Purdue for Gene Keady, where he was first-team All-Big Ten his senior season, and played a few years in the NBA with the Grizzlies and Bucks.

Personally, I think this is a very good hire for Tennessee. He played for a good coach (Keady), turned around a program very fast in a very underrated Missouri Valley Conference, and considering all the turmoil currently at UT, makes a very solid hire for the Vols. The only question is how good he is at recruiting...hopefully not very. (BTW you know who else was under the Gene Keady coaching tree? Answer: Kevin Stallings. Kevin Stallings. Kevin Stallings)

  1. Any word yet on if Kevin Ware still wants out of Tennessee?

  2. I think he does. But then again, I'm sure he hasn't had a ton of contact with the new coach yet. We should find out something soon.
