Monday Hoops Reaction

Here is what Mark Fox said on his twitter account following our 60-56 victory over South Carolina Saturday:

Here is what I said (p.c. version): "Son of a &*$#, my blood pressure can't take this &*^#". So, needless to say, I had some mixed emotions after our near tailspin collapse.

In case you missed it, after nearly blowing a 22-point second-half lead, we BARELY hung on to claim the victory. I mean, S.C. scored a whopping NINE points in the first half, only to squeak out 47 in the second. The near miracle comeback was mainly due to some lazy defense, much better shooting, and a flurry of turnovers by the Dawgs.

But, we did end up on the victorious side of things which means a few good things:
  1. We are now 6-2 in true road games. We only have three left (@Tenn, @UF, and @Bama), which means we are guaranteed to have a winning record on the road. This is a vast improvement over last year's...uh...ZERO road wins.
  2. We are still in good shape (albeit temporary) regarding our NCAA tournament hopes. Joe Lunardi at ESPN had us as an 11-seed before our victory Saturday, so I imagine we will only improve in his new bracket (released later today). Avoiding bad losses (like this one would have been) is key.
  3. We are now in a tie for second place in the SEC East. Florida is now running away with it in the East (they are now 9-2), but remember, the top two seeds in each division get a first-round bye in the SEC Tourney. Who is tied with us for 2nd? Answer: Our opponent Wednesday -- Vandy. A win over the Commodores would put us in 2nd by ourselves and more importantly, give us another very solid win.
I'm not going into much detail our how our players performed Saturday because it will just make me angry, but it was basically more of the same -- except that we played an opponent that shot 14% in the first half so...

The game Wednesday is just massive; we haven't been very dominant at home this year, but this is one game we REALLY need. Vandy is coming off a big home win over Kentucky, so I THINK we are catching them at a good time. On the other hand, they are playing very good ball lately and we aren't really clicking. I'm already conceding defeat in our upcoming road games (Tenn. and UF) so if we can get a win Wednesday, a victory in either of those road games would be icing on the cake....IF we win Wednesday that is.

1 comment:

  1. Saturday earned the distinction as the "Most painful SEC road win ever." Rarely does anyone finish a game on the wrong side of a 32-13 run and still win.
