Deion Barnes to Commit Shortly

There are three big announcements today that may concern Dawg fans. As I'm sure you're aware by now, we'll be covering the two instate guys' ceremonies this evening, but what could be an important part of this class will reportedly be committing within the hour. Weakside linebacker Deion Barnes of Philadelphia, PA will be choosing the school at which he will be spending the next 3-5 years. He's recently narrowed his list to Paterno's Blue Cats and the local, Classic City favorite.

As a 6'5 230 pound kid with a lot of athleticism and range, it looks like Barnes would be ideally suited for OLB in Todd Grantham's 3-4 defense. While that may be the case, word on the street is that he could well be considered a heavy lean to the Nittany Lions. He did have some comments for those who feel that Penn State will be his school of choice:

"A lot of people think I'm going to Penn State, but I don't pay any mind to that," he said. "They don't know what's going on in my mind." (Rick O'Brien, Philadelphia Enquirer)

Even though he did visit Athens this weekend, I don't have a lot of confidence that he'll be picking the Red and Black this morning. We have no track record of getting blue chip recruits from the Northeast (excluding #24) and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon. Maybe I'll be wrong though, it sure would be nice to have the #3 WDE in the country on the roster next year. We're extremely thin and this guy might be able to give us some quality minutes early.
