Dear Todd Grantham: An Open Letter to the Dawgs D-Coordinator

This letter isn't about chastising or criticizing what is obviously looming inside your cranial cavity, it's about what our defense causes. No, it hasn't "caused" the Dawgs turnover margin to improve. It also isn't about causing the Dawg's rush defense to get better or the penalties to go back to normal.

This is about how your defense causes opposing teams' key offensive player to be named SEC Offensive Player of the Week almost half of the time we play an SEC game. For a third time this year, Todd, your defense has not only NOT keyed on the best player on the other team, but has allowed him to thrive. While I feel that this situation is regrettable and must improve, for some reason, I give you a pass this year.

There are a few reasons I have chosen to give you some leeway:

  1. You put the best players on the field, regardless of class position. Much UN-like Willie Martinez.
  2. Interior line play has been lackluster. Hey Rodney Garner, we have 4 and 5 star recruits at these positions. Please do a better job here or you're next on the boat to "Willie's Island of Misfit Coordinators".
  3. Safeties do more backpedaling than frontpedaling. I seriously think our safeties sometimes run away from contact. I watch befuddled.
  4. One of the Dawg's starting corners would probably play safety anywhere else. Don't get me wrong, I like him, but he's HUGE. I should just say, "We're really, really thin at cornerback."
If there is a third and more than five, I must assume that the other team will pick up said 3rd down on a crossing route over the middle. This seems to happen every time. Todd, I know your defense is predicated on getting pressure on the quarterback, but what about the coverage in the secondary? Is it okay to let guys frolic back there like Bambi in a field of buttercups? I surmise you would think not.

I like your ways of coaching and choking, so please improve this defense come next year. I want to see many more games with your histrionics on the sideline. I so enjoy your thrashing of players who mess up, and you seem to have a sound gameplan. I bet you'd say it isn't always executed to your liking, which I can buy.

Plus, isn't it fun to be in the center of every uninformed Bulldog armchair quarterback's crosshairs?

Regards,

MVD

  1. Better stats than Willie, New Defense, Offenses across the board are scoring more in the SEC. I'm ashamed at times I bother reading Dawg Blogs

  2. Defense has improved, just wait until Coach G gets HIS players in here. Should see some of those come in next class and then more visible improvement will be seen. GO DAWGS!!

  3. It's not like he had a lot to work with. We have midgets for CB's and the safeties are all mouth and no hit.

  4. Here's the problem. We may have some of his players coming in. But they've got to learn the system. Just like this years bunch.

  5. I have been a UGA fan since the days of Herschel and Vince Dooley. I must say that I am proud of my dawgs and the way they have competed this season. From my perspective they have been in every game so far this year. This team played their hearts out on all 6 of their losses this year and if not for a few bad plays there record would have been much improved. Let's not forget how irrelevant the dawgs were during the days of Ray Goff and Jim Donnan and how relevant they are now. Mark Richt has earned the right to turn this ship around and I for one am happy that he is at the Helm.
Remember we barely lost to Arkansas, Mississippi State, South Carolina without our best player, a new quarterback and a new defensive scheme. All three of these teams are currently ranked in the top 25 and South Carolina is competing in the SEC championship. We lost to Florida in overtime because they had an extra week to prepare which enabled them to implement a new offensive scheme. I believe we would have been victorious if not for Florida bye week. We competed at Auburn but let's face reality, Cam Newton is probably the best college quarterback to ever play the game and we knew that this was going to be a shoot out. The only bad loss was to Colorado, and if not for Caleb fumble we would have won that game. This team has gained valuable experience this year and will improve drastically next year and years to come. GOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!!!!

  6. Ladies and Gents,

Thanks for reading. All of your comments are much appreciated.

Even Anon 6:54, who I'm pretty sure insulted me. His syntax has me somewhat confused and I think he didn't read my whole letter.

Oh, we can't get a proven head coach here. 1 who knows how to hire a coaching staff, 1 who can bring discipline on and off the field, 1 who can win and not lose 20 games the last 5 years. Mike Smith makes $ 3 million the same as Coach Richt. We didn't pay that to Coach Richt when he came here; we weren't paying that then. Now, we are. We might have to pay more than $ 3 million. Mike Smith isn't coming here for $ 3 million. The cupboard is bare. It is going to take MORE.

Does anyone really have any confidence whatsoever that Coach Richt will hire the right "coaching staff" now given his failures, utter failures at hiring a coaching staff ?

    I don't.
