Hoop Dawgs Get Third Commitment for 2011

John Florveus of Hillsborough Community College has committed to Georgia per Dan McDonald at ugasports.com. The 7-foot 215 pound prospect makes the Dawgs third commitment for the 2011 class.

Florveus will need to add some bulk to his frame.
Fletcher Page has a great article on Florveus' commitment over at Scout.com:

“I can’t say enough about coach Fox and his staff,” Hillsborough head coach Byron Samuels said. “It’s just an honest, clean cut approach. It’s not bells and whistles. It’s not razzle-dazzle. It’s just predicated on all the things that if my son were being recruited it’s all the things that I would look for.”

“He got back about 1 o’clock yesterday we had practice from about three to six,” Samuels said. “We sat down last night for a couple hours actually after practice. I guess about 8:30 or so he said, ‘Coach this is where I want to go. This is the best place for me.”

As far as what this means for UGA, it appears that JF is more of a defensive signing than an offensive one. In his first year at HCC, he shot 54% and averaged just under 4 ppg, while snagging 3.5 rebounds and blocking 2.5 shots. Florveus played in all of Hillsborough's games, but he appeared to be pretty much only a role player last season.

He looks like he runs the floor well for a man of his size and has decent footwork, but will not wow you with his athleticism. I think it's pretty safe to say he will fill play a similar role to AJax, as he has a similar skill set.

I think this is a good late pickup by Fox that addresses a critical need. Florveus had offers from Iowa State, Washington State, UTEP, and Marshall. It has also been mentioned that Utah and Memphis were showing interest. If Tim Floyd at UTEP was interested enough to offer this guy a scholarship, I think we're getting a good player. Even though he's a crook, he's a good coach and knows talent when he sees it.

Congratulations Mr. Florveus and I hope to see you in Red and Black soon!
